Poincaré Complex Diagonals

چکیده
Let M be a Poincaré duality space of dimension d ≥ 4. In this paper we describe a complete obstruction to realizing the diagonal map M → M×M by a Poincaré embedding. The obstruction group depends only on the fundamental group and the parity of d.

On symmetric realizations of the simplicial complex of 3-crossing-free sets of diagonals of the octagon
Motivated by the question of the polytopal realizability of the simplicial complex Γn,k of (k + 1)-crossing-free sets of diagonals of the convex n-gon, we study the first non-obvious case, namely the simplicial complex Γ8,2 of 3-crossing-free sets of diagonals of the convex octagon. We give a complete description of the space of symmetric realizations of Γ8,2, that is, of the polytopes P whose ...
متن کاملThe complex of non-crossing diagonals of a polygon
Given a convex n-gon P in the Euclidean plane, it is well known that the simplicial complex θ(P ) with vertex set given by diagonals in P and facets given by triangulations of P is the boundary complex of a polytope of dimension n − 3. We prove that for any nonconvex polygonal region P with n vertices and h+ 1 boundary components, θ(P ) is a ball of dimension n + 3h − 4. We also provide a new p...
متن کاملCharacterizations of Orthodiagonal Quadrilaterals
We prove ten necessary and sufficient conditions for a convex quadrilateral to have perpendicular diagonals. One of these is a quite new eight point circle theorem and three of them are metric conditions concerning the nonoverlapping triangles formed by the diagonals. 1. A well known characterization An orthodiagonal quadrilateral is a convex quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals. The most...
متن کاملFranklin Squares: A Chapter in the Scientific Studies of Magical Squares
Several aspects of magic(al) squares studies fall within the computational universe. Experimental computation has revealed patterns, some of which have lead to analytic insights, theorems, or combinatorial results. Other numerical experiments have provided statistical results for some very difficult problems. While classical nth order magic squares with the entries 1..n2 must have the magic sum...
متن کاملElementary Moves on Polygonal Triangulations of the Disk
Definition 3 (Polygonal Triangulation). Let K be a two-dimensional simplicial complex (i.e., a collection of triangles). If K is homeomorphic to a disk, then it is called a triangulation of a disk. Furthermore, if K is a k-gon divided by diagonals into k − 2 triangles, then K will be called a polygonal triangulation. See Figure 1. A k-gon dissected into k − 2 triangles will be called a k-triang...
